In my article “Pets Are Big Business,” I discuss the trends that make pet products and services such a great opportunity for entrepreneurs: America is a nation of animal lovers, and pets are the new status symbols; a well cared-for pet is a sign of achievement.

Not only do we have more pets per household then ever before; additional trends in pet demographics create new niches for pet products and services. In particular, “senior pets” are carving out a niche of their own. Consider:

–Pets are living longer than ever before. This is a self-perpetuating cycle: pets receive better care; they live longer; older pets require specialized products and services.

We talk of ‘Born Leaders’, people who have that certain ‘X-Factor’ when it comes to decision making and leading others, but I must dispel the myth right now that these are qualities which you cannot develop within yourself over time. Even the meekest, most humble little clerk can develop themselves into a lean, mean dealing machine with hard work and self-confidence. So if you’re reading this and think that this is all over your head, ask yourself: ‘Is that really what I want?’ So you want to be a follower all your life, obeying orders at every turn? I doubt you want to look back at your life and find that there’s nothing spectacular to note.
